October 1, 2011
Members of 51 local teams--from the Hoboken Elysianettes to the Reservoir Dogs--raced two laps of Central Park in Grete's Great Gallop, a team-points half-marathon run in cool, damp conditions on Sunday, October 1. The open-division team races were won by seasonal leaders West Side Runners (men) and the New York Athletic Club (women)--and they both had the individual winners as well: Tesfaye Assefa Dube of West Side won the men's race in 1:05:44, and NYAC's Sarah Cummings took the women's race in 1:21:32. In masters competition, the 40+ age-group team winners were the men of Urban Athletics and the women of Athena New York; the 50+ champions were Central Park Track Club New Balance (men) and Athena New York (women); the 60+ winners were the New York Flyers (men) and Central Park Track Club New Balance (women). Fast times and tough competition are appropriate elements of an event that honors the late Grete Waitz, the greatest competitor in the history of the New York City Marathon.
