| June 11, 2011 "This one's for Grete" was the theme of the 40th running of the NYRR New York Mini 10K, the original women-only road race, founded by the late NYRR president Fred Lebow in 1972. The race and related events served as a fitting tribute to Grete Waitz, the five-time Mini champion and nine-time winner of the New York City Marathon, who died in April following a long battle with cancer. A Friday evening reception included heartfelt reminiscences by those who knew and loved Waitz, including former NYRR president and CEO Allan Steinfeld, chairman of the NYRR board of directors George Hirsch, and New Zealand Olympian Anne Audain. On race day, Waitz's husband Jack was part of a small group of men who became the first-ever male finishers in Mini history. The group ran with members of Active Against Cancer, a foundation supported by Waitz and adidas, her longtime sponsor. Many runners and spectators wore turquoise "This one's for Grete" shirts to honor the great champion and humanitarian.
