While a few of the runners at the head of the field of some 6,000 participants in the Emerald Nuts Midnight Run were looking for a speedy start to 2012, most of the rest of the runners and walkers were content to move at a pace that allowed them to just take it all in (many with their cell phone cameras)--the crowds, the costumes, the fireworks, the fans, and even the non-alcoholic champagne at the two-mile mark. "It was my first time ever running it, and it was just so much fun," said Joe Rich, a longtime member of NYRR and a two-time ING New York City Marathon finisher who lives just a few blocks from Central Park. Many ran in costume, including The Sisters of St. Emerald, a group of eight women playfully dressed as nuns--Cashewa, Pecanus, Almonda, and others. The mild, windless conditions added to the festive atmosphere as runners of all ages and abilities stepped into a healthy new year.
