January 22, 2011

The coldest day of 2011 (so far) was no obstacle for 4,358 well-insulated runners who toughed it out for more than two full laps--13.1 miles--of Central Park's hills to finish the NYRR Manhattan Half-Marathon despite a temperature of only 14 degrees. Some of them warmed up quite nicely: Eddie Owens, only 17 years old, won the men's race by more than a minute and a half in an excellent time of 1:10:25; Jane Vongvorachoti, 27, was just as impressive, taking the women's title in 1:22:48, almost three minutes in front.  Race officials and volunteers may have turned in the most noteworthy performances of all; it takes a special kind of endurance to work an hours-long event in sub-freezing weather.
