| September 24, 2011 The 31st annual Fifth Avenue Mile drew a world-class field of runners and a crowd of fans lining the 20-block course to catch a glimpse of them. Jenny Simpson debuted at 4:22.3, beating Kenya's Sally Kipyego and Hannah England, who finished second and third, respectively, both posting a finishing time of 4:22.6. In the men's pro race, Bernard Lagat stole the top spot from defending champion Amine Laalou of Morocco. Lagat's 3:50.5 bested Laalaou's time by more than one second, while American David Torrence's third-place finish in 3:52.4 was leap forward from his ninth-place ranking last year. It was the first time in 11 years that two Americans had topped the podium at this race.
