The NYRR Youth Jamboree, A Track & Field & Wellness Event, took the spotlight on Sunday, October 23, at the New Balance Track & Field Center at the Armory. Music blasted and the crowds cheered for Pre-K through fifth grade kids, who ran events including the 55-meter and 200-meter dashes, 4x200 relays, shot put, and long jump in the morning session. At halftime, an uplifting welcome was delivered by NYRR vice president of Youth and Community Services Cliff Sperber. NYRR board of directors member and The Armory Foundation executive director Dr. Norbert Sander then introduced Derrick Adkins, the 1996 Olympic 400-meter hurdles champion, who spoke to the crowd of parents and athletes. The halftime events included the national anthem sung by the Voices of Gotham, three performances by Sportacus, and the presentation of the Children's Fitness Champions Awards for 2010-2011. The afternoon focus then shifted to the older kids, sixth grade through high school, who ran an 800-meter invitational, 55 meters, 400 meters, long jump, shot put, and 4x200-meter relays.
