The invitational race offered the toughest competition, as athletes squeezed through a narrow door and then jockeyed for position through the lower floors. Five-time and defending champion Thomas Dold of Germany extended his streak to six. “I was first going into the staircase, which helped,” he said afterward. Although he wasn’t able to crack the 10:00 barrier, Dold was pleased with his race. “I was able to stand on my own two feet for the first time at the finish,” he joked.

The women’s race crowned a new champion, Alice McNamara of Australia. An accomplished rower, McNamara is no stranger to stair training, though this was her first race. “I used my arms a lot, and I watched last year’s race on YouTube—so I was prepared for the mad dash at the start,” she said. “I’ve run a marathon and rowed in championship races, but this was the hardest thing I’ve ever done!”
