Undeterred by scorching near-90-degree temperatures, more than 10,000 runners and walkers took to the narrow, office-building-lined streets of the Financial District for this three-mile race that has two goals: raise money for the American Heart Association (AHA) and encourage Americans to start exercising. The annual NYRR event raised $1.7 million for AHA, attracted both seasoned and beginner athletes, and featured a pre-race pep talk from CBS 2 News anchor Kate Sullivan (photo #3), who then hopped down from the podium to join the walkers. After some impressive times (Jamie Villa Zapatero took the men’s race in 14:44, and 19-year-old Ivette Mejia won the women’s title in 17:49), participants flooded the North Cove Marina for post-race festivities that included CPR lessons, health screenings, and plenty of ice-cold beverages.
