Temperatures had started to climb by the time 500+ women toed the line for the 2010 NYRR Team Championships, but that was fitting... considering the ladies ran some utterly smoking times. The women of New York Athletic Club (NYAC) nabbed places one through five to sweep the race (five runners per team score, with results based on combined time) and cinch a decisive victory over runner-up Central Park Track Club in the annual event, which counts for double points in the year's team standings. Reilly Kiernan of NYAC broke the tape in 28:17, besting her closest competitor, teammate Leslie Higgins, by 43 seconds. But as the Team Champs prove every year, the day isn't just about winning: Athletes of every ability level and from every age group came out to compete (team awards were also given in the 40+, 50+, and 60+ divisions), but just as important, they gathered to celebrate the camaraderie of being part of a team, the rush of friendly competition, and the satisfaction of being a member of the New York City running community, which—like the city that hosts it—is the world's best.
