August 7, 2010
Every year, the running teams of the metropolitan area gather in Central Park for the NYRR Team Championships, a clubs-only race that counts for double the points in the year's team standings. Nearly 800 runners took to the line on a refreshingly temperate August morning, and, not surprisingly, the best and the brightest runners ignited some early-a.m. fireworks. West Side Runners blistered the five-mile course, taking the first five places and the team title, beating runner-up NYAC by more than five minutes in the scoring, which is culled from the combined times of each team's top 10 finishers. West Side's Kumsa Adugna Megersa won in 23:57 over teammate Mohammed Awol (24:01), but arguably the day's best performance belonged to AdiRun NYC's 45-year-old Jimmy Lynch, who handily won the masters title with a super-swift 25:07. While team titles were also awarded in the 40+, 50+, and 60+ age divisions, the race wasn't just about chalking one up in the win column; runners of every age and pace came out to show their team spirit in a race that celebrates the camaraderie of being on a team and the friendly competition between area teams. Fittingly, many of the teams congregated for post-race softball games in the park or headed off to local restaurants for brunch and some well-earned refreshments.
