Although the day was cool and windy, there was bright sunshine and a strong showing by the 1,200 girls and boys aged 4 to 15 who participated in the various races. The younger kids started with the 100-meter dash, the 200-meter dash, the long jump, and the shot put. Later they did the 4 x 200-meter relays. The same track and field events were done by the tweens and teens, who also ran the 400 meters. There was a 55-meter dash for 4-year-olds, as well as an 800-meter invitational run for 10- to-12 year olds.

In addition to announcing the five runners who will participate in a special Five Borough Challenge during the ING New York City Marathon, the opening ceremonies highlighted the five public schools and community centers that were chosen as Children's Fitness Champions from the many excellent ones that participate in NYRR youth programs. Cliff Sperber, Executive Director of NYRR Youth and Community Services, presented the Mighty Milers and Young Runner Champion Banners as part of his talk to the excited crowd of young athletes, spectators, friends, and family.
