Mighty Milers on National Running Day

The sound of kids cheering and laughing at Icahn Stadium today could practically be heard from Manhattan. And Haile Gebrselassie’s smile, as he ran relay races with more than 1,500 kids as part of an NYRR Mighty Milers Fun Run event—seemed to light up all of Randall’s Island. The children, who competed in obstacle-course races, kid-safe hurdles, and laps around the Mondo track—a first for many of these new runners who came from all over the city—got a taste of friendly competition, while the bright green National Running Day shirts symbolized the beginning of a lifelong connection to the sport. Gebrselassie and Arata Fujiwara of Japan—who was also on hand at the Mighty Milers event—will run the ING New York City Marathon 2010 on November 7.
