With the ING New York City Marathon just five weeks away, Grete's Great Gallop half-marathon offered a terrific opportunity for a tune-up in Central Park. Named in honor of nine-time New York City Marathon champion Grete Waitz, the race is part of the NYRR team-points series of races that allow NYRR-affiliated teams rack up points in a year-long competition. These incentives, along with perfect weather, resulted in a slew of fast performances. Bado Worku Merdessa led all finishers in 1:06:14, and his West Side Runners (WSX) team placed first in the open division, retaining their lead in the standings. The women's winner, Reilly Kiernan, ran 1:20:06 and led the New York Athletic Club, which also placed first and held onto their first-place ranking so far in 2010. The next race in the series is the ING New York City Marathon on November 7. In the accompanying Norway Run (1.7M), the winners were Justin Scheid of Fleet Feet (8:02) and Beth Reed of Urban Athletics (10:15).
