On a cool, slightly overcast day, the world’s fastest middle-distance runners gathered near the Metropolitan Museum of Art for the start of the Continental Airlines Fifth Avenue Mile. The storied course has hosted many thrilling performances, and this year was no exception.

In the women’s race, American runners took all three podium spots. Defending champion Shannon Rowbury once again surged in the final yards to cross the finish line first. She was followed by 2006 champion Sara Hall in second and Erin Donohue in third. The men’s field was equally packed with talent, including American record-holder Alan Webb and 2009 champion Andy Baddeley of Great Britain. Ireland’s Alistair Cragg surged at the three-quarter- mile mark, but it was Moroccan Amine Laalou who broke the tape with a time of 3:52.83. Eigh-time Millrose Games Wanamaker Mile champion Bernard Lagat finished second, and Baddeley was a close third.
