| December 31, 2010 Can SpongeBob SquarePants run four miles? What about Tinkerbell? Spider-Man? Lady Gaga? A conga line of New York Yankees? The answer is yes to all. And so can the Empire State Building, and, and a guy in a sparkly Speedo and a spiky Statue of Liberty headband, with a giant red "11" painted on his bare chest. And many, many more unlikely characters, objects, and combinations of those--singly, in pairs, and in large groups. In fact, it seems that just about anyone and anything you can think of can travel four miles if it's powered by the legs and lungs of an entrant in the Emerald Nuts Midnight Run, which started off 2011 in a blast of fireworks in Central Park. At a post-run dance and costume parade at the Central Park Bandshell, six of the most imaginative costumed crusaders were proclaimed winners of the Emerald Nuttiest Costume Contest and awarded $200 worth of Emerald Nuts snacks and gifts. (The guy who looked just like rock star Rick Springfield was disqualified; he really was Rick Springfield.) [Event Gallery] [Video] |
