The outpouring of support at the Run for Haiti showed the true spirit of New York City and New York State, as nearly 10,000 runners and walkers turned out for a four-mile race on a cold winter morning in Central Park. Joining them as supporters and in some cases as fellow participants was a group of prominent elected officials on the local, state, and national level. “Today we are taking our love of running and using it to do something for other people,” said United States Senator Kirsten Gillibrand of New York, a two-time marathoner who took part in today’s Run for Haiti.
“The destruction of Haiti is of epic proportions,” said New York City Councilman Mathieu Eugene of Brooklyn, the first Haitian-born official elected to the New York City Council, “but today we can use what is best in human beings to have a positive impact.” [Coverage] [Results]
