A capacity crowd at Icahn Stadium on Randall’s Island witnessed distance running at its best at the adidas Grand Prix, the fifth stop of the inaugural 14-meet Diamond League series. The meet took place as part of a huge day of running in NYC that also included the NYRR New York Mini 10K in Central Park. At the adidas meet, Jada Blackheart (photo 1) and Jonathan Grant (photo 2) won the NYC Mayor’s Fastest Girl and Fastest Boy events; both kids are members of NYRR Young Runners teams. Nicholas Kemboi (photo 3) of Kenya took the title in the Visa men’s 1500 meters in 3:33.29 (a meet record) in a close finish. The women’s 1500 meters was won by 2008 Olympic champion Nancy Jebet Langat of Kenya (photo 4) in a meet-record and 2010 world-leading time of 4:01.60; Jenny Barringer was the top American finisher in fourth place (4:03.63). Paul Kipsiele Koech (photo 5), also of Kenya, won the men’s 3000-meter steeplechase convincingly in 8:10.43; he’d set the meet record in 2008. The NYRR Women’s 5000 meters featured a talented international field (photo 6) and was won by double Olympic gold medalist Tirunesh Dibaba of Ethiopia (photo 7) in 15:11.34.
