A perennial favorite, the Coogan’s Salsa, Blues, and Shamrocks 5K and Kids’ Races got everyone moving in Washington Heights again on the first Sunday in March. Families, friends, and neighbors enjoy this festive event and captures the diversity of this great neighborhood. Bronx residents Juana Espinal and Yani Baldeon greeted one another cheerfully at the 9:00 a.m. race start.

New York State Comptroller Tom DiNapoli presented Coogan’s proprietors Dave Hunt (yellow cap) and Peter Walsh (gray cap) with a proclamation at the race.

The sound of feet pounding the pavement and spectators cheering got the race started.

Resident Yankee fan Freddy came out to cheer on the runners before the baseball season opens in April.

Many competitors, including Brendan Derr of New York, were celebrating even before the race was over.

A Harlem Gazelle from NYRR’s Young Runners program enjoyed taking his running to another level.

West Babylon’s Stephanie Zeis was thrilled with her 23:01 finish time.

More than 300 runners from NYRR’s Youth Programs, including this boy from P.S. 1 in Chinatown, ran the 5K.

Helen Bojes won the 80-89 age group in 42:23 with no problem.

Local team members from Front Runners New York encouraged their teammates to finish strong.

Westchester Track Club’s Derese Deniboba broke the tape in the men’s race in 14:34.

The women’s leader, West Side Runners’ Claudio Camargo finished in 16:35.

It’s hard to resist a green bagel when it’s in the spirit of St. Patty’s Day.

The kids’ races taught children of all ages to do their best.
