Muggy weather couldn't stifle the buoyant spirits of the more than 6,000 runners, walkers, and wheelchair racers who participated in NYRR's 8th Annual Achilles Hope & Possibility five-miler in Central Park. And how could it? Sponsored by Achilles International, which helps athletes with disabilities prepare for races and marathons, the event brought together hordes of athletes, both with disabilities and without, to celebrate the simple joy of competition. Of course, it didn't hurt morale to have the dashing Prince Harry of Wales on hand: As a member of the Achilles Freedom Team of Wounded Veterans, Harry walked the course side by side with recently wounded Iraq and Afghanistan vets. And he wasn't the only celebrity who turned out to show his support. Heather Mills, an amputee herself, movingly addressed the crowd before the start of the wheelchair race. And Gov. David Paterson, Cindy and Meghan McCain (Sen. John McCain's wife and daughter), and "Central Park Jogger" Tricia Meili joined throngs of competitors in the run/walk. Music, a raffle, and disability awareness activities followed the five-mile race, providing the perfect coda to a truly inspirational morning.
