The threat of Tropical Storm Hanna did not wash out an exciting day of racing at the seventh annual fitness® Mind, Body, Spirit Games in Central Park. More than 3,500 runners finished (about 200 more women than men) under very humid and mostly overcast conditions. In the women’s race, the top open team, the New York Athletic Club, dominated with six finishers in the top nine. The men’s contest saw a tight race for the individual overall title and an open team victory by a strong West Side Runners squad.


John Henwood eked out a narrow victory with his 19:31 finish.


Runner-up Dereje Hailegiorgis was just one tick back…


…and his teammate Teklu Tefera Deneke finished third in 19:39.


Mark Olivier of Groton, CT, was fourth in 20:09.


Tesfaye Girma, representing WSX, was fifth in 20:09.


GNY’s Larry Contrella took ninth in 20:44.


Geoff Decker of CPTC rounded out the top 10 (20:47).


Elmustafa McHkirate, 12th in 20:55, was part of the winning open WSX team…


…as was Felipe Garcia, 13th in 20:56.


Brian Gerton of CPTC and Chris Ellis-Ferrara of NYAC both finished in 21:06.


Joni Romero, Los Compadres Team, ran an excellent 22:01.


Kristian Siqueiros of The Reservoir Dogs crossed the line in 27:34.


CPTC’s Armando Oliviera placed third in the 40+ age group.


Greg Diamond, 51, topped his age group with a 22:46 finish.


Leo Gormley, 66, crossed the line in 31:52.


Ageless Witold Bialokur (okay, he’s 73) won his age group in 29:22.


The women’s race winner, Muluye Lemma Gurmu, ran 22:21.


Caroline Bierbaum of NYAC was second in 22:36.


Aileen Conlon, CPTC, notched a 22:59 for third place.


Fourth was Abbi Gleeson (left); fifth was Katarina Janosikova.


Michelle Rafferty of NYAC captured sixth place (23:10).


Jamie Sutherland, seventh, was part of the winning open NYAC team.


Olympic Trials steeplechaser Lesley Higgins finished eighth (23:31).


Stephanie Lenihan was ninth in 23:48…


…followed by NYAC teammate Heidi Hullinger, 10th in 23:54.


New York Harriers runners had a strong showing.


Joy Dushey of the adidas East Women team ran 26:26.


Dina Dayrit of Warren Street ran 35:39.


Deborah Gaebler of GNY was the second masters finisher.


Judy Harrigan of RDNY was the third 50+ finisher.


Rae Baymilller, 65, won her age group in 28:51.


At age 82, Joan Rowland continues to inspire.
