NYRR's Marathon Training Packages

Are you running the ING New York City Marathon or another fall marathon?

Directed by longtime NYRR Running Classes program directors Bob and Shelly Glover and staffed by a team of expert coaches, NYRR Marathon Training Packages provide a complete program to support any runner’s effort to prepare for and complete a marathon.

No previous marathon training experience is required.

With this package, you’ll develop the specific fitness and skills needed to run the marathon of your dreams, and you’ll do it using a structured program designed to keep you motivated and injury-free. Here's what you get:


  • One session per week (Tuesday or Thursday) of NYRR’s Running Classes (speed-training) for 20 weeks
  • One Wednesday session per week of group endurance training (run of four to six plus miles), lecture, and Q&A session for 15 weeks
  • One autographed copy of The Competitive Runner’s Handbook by Bob and Shelly Glover
  • One ING New York City Marathon ASICS Training Hat

Use the spring and early-summer months to lay the groundwork for your best marathon training ever! Get fit, learn what structured training is all about, and enjoy the camaraderie of group runs. Here's what you get:


  • One session per week (Tuesday or Thursday) of NYRR’s Running Classes (speed-training) for 10 weeks
  • One Wednesday session per week of group endurance training (run of four to six plus miles), lecture, and Q&A session for 10 weeks
  • One autographed copy of The Runner’s Handbook by Bob and Shelly Glover
  • One 2010 Official “I’m in” T-shirt

 

Cost: $250 for NYRR members; $295 for non-members


Can I sign up for an extra session of the speed training class?
Yes, you can sign up to take both the Tuesday and Thursday sessions of the NYRR's Running Classes (speed-training) for an additional discounted fee. Please contact the Coach Bob Glover at class to register.

 

Program Format


Tuesday or Thursday:
speed training (intervals, tempo runs, fartlek, hill training) to improve pace and form.

Classes meet at 6:15, 6:30, or 6:45 p.m., depending on your pace.

 

Wednesdays: Lecture, Q&A, and a steady-paced training run for mileage

6:00 p.m.—doors open,  individual time with Coach Glover
6:15–6:30—Q&A with Coach Glover
6:30–6:45—marathon lecture by Coach Glover
6:45–8:15—steady-paced training run of four to six or more miles, in pace groups

Program Directors

Classes are led by experienced group coaches who are trained and supervised by head coaches Bob and Shelly Glover. Coaches are available to answer individual questions before, during, and after classes.

 

The Founder and Director of NYRR’s Running Class program (begun in 1978), Coach Bob Glover has taught thousands of runners of all levels, helping many go from beginners to ING New York City Marathon finishers. Shelly Glover, MA, an exercise physiologist and, has co-directed the classes for 20 years. Combined, they have run more than 50 marathons. They often place in their age groups in NYRR races. Bob and Shelly are co-authors of the best-selling The Runner’s Handbook, The Competitive Runner’s Handbook, and The Runner’s Training Diary.
