The male-dominated start line featured a diverse array of local running teams in the third NYRR team points competition of the year. More than 5,700 runners lined up to fund-raise and raise awareness for lung cancer research.

As the men charged forward, Worku Beyi (#6146), 20, of the Westchester Track Club (WTC), checked out his competition. Within half a mile, ascending Cat hill, the pack thinned slightly.

WTC teammates Beyi and Demesse Tefera, 24, train, live, and race together. The pair trounced the competition and finished nearly neck-and-neck in 18:43, with Beyi crossing the line less than one second before Tefera.

Jorge Real, 36, of West Side Runners, edged past Karl Dusen, 24, of the Manhattan Track Club, during the race, but Dusen pulled ahead to finish fourth in 19:34. Real placed sixth in 20:04.

Top-20 finishers Retta Feyissa, 31, WTC, and Jorge Pardo (#6205), 38, of Urban Athletics, led this pack. Feyissa clinched ninth place in 20:27 and Pardo finished 12th in 20:37.

Beyi broke the tape a mere second before teammate Tefera. The duo’s efforts cemented the WTC’s first-place finish in the men’s open points competition.

Beyi has been running extremely well so far in 2007, with a recent second-place finish at the Coogan’s Salsa, Blues, and Shamrocks 5K. He was also second at the 2006 NYRR Team Championships...

…with Tefera less than one second in front as champion! Tefera also won the FRNY Lesbian and Gay Pride Run, the Hope & Possibility 5M, and the Joe Kleinerman 10K (the latter in 29:48 and again just in front of Beyi) in 2006.

An avid marathoner, Retta Feyissa of WTC won the 2004 Marine Corps Marathon in 2:25:35, and placed 34th at the ING New York City Marathon (2:27:29) that same year.
