Making Tracks Around Gotham

We'll never stop loving Central Park, but New York is home to plenty of other great places to train.

Manhattan

The spot: East River Promenade

The route: Start at 59th Street off of York Avenue and run uptown to the footbridge at 120th street. Turn around back to your starting point for a six-mile out-and-back. Not tired yet? Hit Carl Schurz Park on 88th Street, a leafy swath that's home to Gracie Mansion. For a change of pace, head south and check out the nearly complete extension of the promenade on the Lower East Side (between Cherry Street and 14th Street). [View Map]

Staten Island

The spot: Silver Lake and Clove Lakes Park

The route: Tormey starts with a 1.3-mile loop around the reservoir in Silver Lake Park, then exits and heads south on Victory Boulevard. A 1.5-mile stretch then takes you to Clove Lakes Park, where you can link up with a 3-mile path circling the baseball fields and Brooks Lake, Martling Lake, and Clove Lake. Head back onto Victory Boulevard and return to Silver Lake Park to complete the run.

Brooklyn

The spot: Two Bridges Run

The route: From Brooklyn, access the Manhattan Bridge's South Walkway on Jay Street between Sands and Nassau streets. Cross the bridge, then head down the East River promenade and run toward the Brooklyn Bridge and back across the East River. From Manhattan, begin on Bowery between Canal and Bayard streets. Once in Brooklyn, head south to the Brooklyn Bridge and access it at the intersection of Tillary and Adams streets. [View Map]

Bronx

The spot: Old Croton Trail

The route: Pick up the trail at the northern edge of Van Cortlandt Park and continue all the way to Tibbetts Brook Park in Yonkers for a fast-and-flat seven-miler. If you're up for a longer run, do a loop through Tibbetts or keep following the trail—it ultimately ends at the New Croton Dam in Cortlandt, NY.

Queens

The spot: Randall's Island

The route: From Astoria, run over the RFK Bridge onto Randall's Island. Look for a wooden pedestrian bridge, cross it, then turn right, and stay on the path until you hit Hellgate Bridge. Turn around and return to Astoria for a six-mile run. [View Map]
